Learn more about BACH through the experiences of those who have been through the program.
"The BACH Program has been a life saver for me and my family. We really truly did not have anything and were facing homelessness (and had been nearly homeless for years). When the BACH Case Manager approached me about this transitional housing program, my daughter and I were being evicted from an apartment with no heat and no working stove. We had no car and no one that could take us in. We had no options and were so far down that I was afraid to take the offer for help because I no longer believed in myself.
When I finally did make the decision to apply for the BACH Program and was accepted, it was like someone threw me a life preserver and rescued my daughter and me from drowning. BACH has been our lifeline ever since then. They gave us a safe, warm place to live, with a working stove, and my daughter had her own bedroom for the first time. We also had a fenced in yard where my daughter could safely play outside. It might not sound like a lot to some people, but it meant the world to my daughter and me. BACH helped me to get the medical attention that I desperately needed by fighting with the state insurance and helping me to find a good doctor that could help me with my many health issues. They helped me to make better decisions, stay sober, eat better, and maintain my home. They helped me to purchase a car and regain independence. They helped me to start believing in myself again. We have monthly meetings with a support committee of Board members. At first, I was intimidated by these meetings. But then I saw that these people believed in me too, and I grew to look forward to these meetings. My support committee pushed me and pushed me to be a better person. They also stood behind me many times when I felt like I was failing. And, they also made my daughter feel special as well. They helped me to throw my daughter’s first birthday party at the age of 10. There are just no words to express how grateful I am for their support. It was not always easy. There were days that I didn’t even want to get out of bed in the morning, but they helped me to get up and fight every day. I began seeing a therapist and facing demons from my past that have kept me down for so many years. This has been a very difficult journey, but I press on because I want to be a better person for me and for my daughter. It is amazing to see her beginning to make better choices because she sees me making better choices. My goals have changed during my time in the program as I learned more about myself and my dreams and limitations. It was difficult to discover that my health problems have become so severe in the past few years that I now need to pursue social security disability. This is a whole new fight, but my support committee and Case Manager are helping me through each step of this journey as well. We are just two people in this world, but BACH has changed our lives for the better. Thank you to BACH. Thank you for saving us!" Her advice to future BACH residents: BACH is life-changing if you work with the program and work to better yourself. The support is there if you put in the work and push yourself past your fears and comfort zones. |
